Jon Lovitz Is My Hero

So this is not really relevant to anything as this video was posted many months ago, but a friend of mine sent this to me yesterday with the instructions “you should blog about this”.  I will indulge him because I LOVE Jon Lovitz.  This is a YouTube video o f Jon Lovitz talking about how his myspace page is real and not a hoax.  He talks about his new comedy club and how he is doing stand up now.  If you go to his myspace page it talks about how he just started doing stand up and how Dane Cook has taken him under his wing or something and how supportive he has been.  I find this pretty sad since Dane Cook is pretty much a huge douche bag and of limited talents.  Jon Lovitz however is probably one of the funniest people on Earth.  It is sort of upsetting to see him posting photos of him and Cook on his page.  Also slightly upsetting is the comments on Lovitz page where he is shilling for his movie Benchwarmers.  He calls it “really funny”.  While I have no problem with someone plugging one of their films, to put his reputation on the line and call Benchwarmers funny is off putting.  This is because that Benchwarmers might be the worst film I have ever seen.  Ever.  It is consistently terrible.  Rob Shnider is the straight man somehow… the hero.  There is not one laugh in the whole movie… except when Lovitz is on screen.  He is pretty fantastic in it actually.  I started cracking up pretty much every time he was on screen.

Anyway, this video is just weird and surreal and you should just watch it and then go Netflix Hapiness, Trapped In Paradise and the entire series of the Critic and laugh your ass off.

Apologies for the randomness of this, I had an idea for the post but then I started watching hockey and writing a sentence or two between stoppages and I sort of lost my way.

State Reunion Show!

So I just got an email from someone over at UCB and they told me that last month the State did a reunion show at UCB Theater in LA. If anyone is not aware of who the State are, please get educated. The State was a sketch comedy show in MTV in the early 90’s. It was probably the best show on TV at the time. Many of the State have gone on to amazing things. David Wain directed Wet Hot American Summer which was co written my Michael Showalter. The movie also starred Michael Ian Black who is that dude from the Sierra Mist commercials (not to mention many other things). The three of them also make up Stella which is a stand up comedy trio who also do amazing sketch videos and then had their own show on Comedy Central that was far too weird for any mass audience to enjoy. I don’t know who gave them a show in the first place, but I appreciate it. The other very successful branch off the State was Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant who along with Mr. Ian Black and the extremely sexxy Kerri Kenney started a variety show on Comedy Central called Viva Variety which while short lived was one of the most brilliant things I have ever seen on TV. The same group, minus Michael Ian Black then went on to do Reno 911 which has been the most successful State alumni project to date. Lennon and Garant also write and do touch ups for consistently horrible comedies such as Balls Of Fury, The Pacifier, Herbie Fully Loaded and Taxi! The other members of the State show up in things, mostly other State related projects from time to time, with Joe Lo Truglio getting the most work. He starred in the amazing web TV show Horrible People which just ended its first season today. Every member of the State was also in Wain’s film “The Ten” which came out last year.

Anyway, the first section from their LA reunion is below, and they will be releasing a new sketch here every Monday for the next few weeks.

State reunion better come to NYC… and MTV better finally release the State on DVD. The wait is killing me. You can see some episodes on iTunes in the meanwhile.

Whale Songs

I keep telling you guys about my return to my obsession with Tom Green… Well it is not without reason. This is why he is still brilliant. He rocks the house from city to city.

Auto Update Florida #3: Stella Saturday

I have been a Stella fan for a long time, long before they had their TV show. I bought the Stella shorts DVD collection many years ago, but they never sent it to me and I had to buy the second pressing of it kinda recently. Anyway, I had seen all the shorts, and by far my favorite one (actually, Dick Fish was a close second) was their music video for Chicago’s Saturday which is a pretty amazing song. The best part of it was seeing this guy dance in his underwear. It was amazing. Years later I moved to NYC and I have ended up becoming friends with this man. His name is Seth Herzog and I have blogged about him before. He does a comedy show at the Slipper Room on Tuesdays. I keep forgetting to go, so if you feel like going one day, remind me and we can go together. Sorry. Random. Watch the video. It is great.

Auto Update Florida #1: Tom Green

So I am on a plane right now on the way to Miami for Winter Music shit. I posted the fliers yesterday so you know what’s up I guess. Anyway here is the first of 7 updates that you will be getting automatically when I am gone. I should have time to do other updates, but I didn’t while I was at SXSW, so this time I am on top of shit.

I just rediscovered Tom Green. I have spent probably 10 hours on his site in the last week. I was sort of obsessed with him in 1999, but like I sort of forgot about him at some point. Evidently he now does an internet talk show from his house that is occasionally shown on TV or something. I have yet to see it live, but there are TONS of old episodes on there as well as every episode of the pre Mtv Tom Green Show. His new show is way less insane, but it is very interesting. He just sits and talks to some celebs for like an hour about all sorts of random things. He tattooed Kat Von D, got in a near fist fight with Andrew Dice Clay and he out battled Xzibit. Below is the first episode of his old old show, but make sure you click those links above for amazing footage from his new show.

Improv Everywhere Food Court Musical

I have been following Improv Everywhere for years. They recently blew up when their video of people freezing at Grand Central Station blew up on the internets. For their newest video they performed a musical in the middle of a mall food court. I have always wanted to do this, and evidently I am not alone because they got over 100 requests for this mission before they did it. There is no real point in me talking about it, just watch the video. Behind the scenes stuff can be found here.

Alt Comedy In The NY Post

My friend Seth Herzog sent out an email about his interview with the NY Post yesterday. He, as well as several other of my friends/acquaintances were interviewed about underground comedy in New York and how while standard two drink minimum comedy clubs were on the way out, underground clubs were thriving. The article laments the end of Invite Them Up, but points out shows like Seth’s Sweet and Eugene Mirman’s other Show Veil Of The Maya are kicking ass weekly. Anyway, it is a pretty long article and it features a lot of people I think are amazing, so I figured you guys should read it. So READ THIS ARTICLE! And then watch the first episode of Horrible People that features some of my favorite alt-comedians in New York. Although only one of them, my future wife Kristen Schaal, is mentioned in the article, it is still brilliant.

Invite Them Up Says Goodbye – Day 3 – 2.27.08

And it’s over. Invite Them Up’s 6 year run has come to an end. Pretty much every comic said it was the best room in New York. A place where they could all come and test out their material and fuck around and have a great time. I have been going since I first moved to NYC and I met a ton of rad people and laughed myself to tears. Highlights from the night included Baldo’s 30 Seconds Of Stand Up dance party, Demetri’s touching eulogy/set, a standing ovation for Eugene & Bobby and Jon Benajmin putting his own urine into the Invite Them Up time capsule. It was amazing. I took over 600 photos. Here was the last line up ever:

Kristen Schaal
Jim Gaffigan
Eric Slovin & Leo Allen
Todd Barry
Chelsea Peretti
DJ Craig Baldo
Mike Birbiglia (enjoy your Google Alert)
Jon Benjamin & Jon Glazer
Demetri Martin

RIP.
